The Ferrari Dino 246 GT was equipped with a 65-degree transverse rear V6 engine. With a stroke diameter of 92.5X60 mm, 2,400 cubic centimeters that delivered a power of 195 hp and 187 Newton meters of torque.
It was fed with three Weber 40 DCN F / 7 carburetors, double camshaft and two valves per cylinder. The engine was linked to an all-synchromesh 5-speed Manual transmission, connected by a single disc clutch.
The name Dino was put in honor of the eldest and only legitimate son of Enzo Ferrari, Alfredo Dino Ferrari. Together with the famous engineer, Vittorio Jano, Alfredo influences Enzo Ferrari’s decision to create a line of racing cars with V6 and V8 engines.
The Dino brand was created thinking of bringing to market a more affordable sports car than any other Ferrari. Enzo wanted to compete with the Porsche 911, with an economic model, but he did not want the “Ferrari” brand to be identified with an accessible car for that reason he thought of Dino.
In 1966 he also wanted to compete in Formula 2 with the Dino V6, but he had problems since he had to produce 500 vehicles (of the same engine) to achieve approval to compete with the model. For this reason, Enzo asked Fiat to start a joint production of the same sports car with the engine to compete. In this way the Fiat Dino was born with front engine and rear wheel drive.
Although the engine in the middle was widely used in the world of competition, the idea of taking it to a street car was somewhat risky. The average layout of the engine carried much of the weight to the driving wheels and helped to have a streamlined nose, but left little room for the passenger and made steering more difficult.
The Dino 246 GT made its official debut at the Turin Motor Show in November 1969, although production had already begun. Aesthetically the 246 GT was almost identical to the 206 GT it replaced, except that the fuel filler cap was hidden by the left rear pillar panel, accompanied by an increase in displacement of 2 to 2.4 liters, the engine block material passed to be cast steel instead of aluminum and other less obvious changes.
During the production period of the 246 GT, from 1969 to 1974, no significant changes were made. Despite this, there were some variations in small details, which gave rise to three series of models known as “L”, “M” and “E”. The 246 GT appears in the Geneva Motor Show in 1972, with a removable black roof, without the triangular rear windows that were replaced by two metal panels with three openings.
It was offered with wider Campagnola rims and a different design from the standard Cromodora, accompanied by more bulky fins, as well as seats very similar to those of the “Daytona”, with more elaborate seams and thin horizontal strips in the center . The dino 246 GT was mounted on a chassis with 2.34 meter wheelbase, built on the same 206 GT platform, modified for the production period.
