The Ford C-Max is a five-seater minivan, belonging to segment C, with a length of 4.38 meters. The Ford Grand C-Max version is fifteen centimeters longer and has an interior with seven seats. With the introduction of the large minivans Ford S-Max and Ford Galaxy, the C-Max is halfway in the company’s range, above the Ford B-Max.
The second generation is built on Ford’s ‘Global-C’ platform (as was the third-generation Ford Focus). Its appearance is inspired by the Ford Iosis Max Concept, shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2009, and is marketed since 2010.
In 2015 it undergoes a restyling with changes in exterior design, interiors with new finishes, improvements in practicality and a more efficient engine update. The C-Max has earned a reputation for offering a balance between pleasant driving and flexible and spacious interior equipment.
Its exterior line has been redesigned to reflect the manufacturer’s new global design language: ‘One Ford’. It offers a more elegant and stylized front, with the characteristic trapezoidal grill of Ford. The windshield wipers have hidden under the front moon to offer a cleaner hood design. The headlights, more stylized and marked, next to the fog lamps, more rectangular and elongated, add character to the front of both vehicles. The gate has a more fluid appearance and, together with the design of the compact rear optics, complete a much more elaborate design.
The interior of the C-Max and Grand C-Max also show improvements aimed at passengers. The distribution of the elements, more intuitive, has fewer controls and buttons, while the new finishes with chrome details contribute to give it a cleaner and more modern look.
The redesigned center console offers more space and features integrated sliding armrests. A larger, deeper storage area significantly improves the ability to store objects in the dashboard, which also incorporates a new USB connection socket for charging mobile devices.
The interior design as a whole is cleaner and more intuitive, offering greater comfort. Ford engineers have reduced noise and vibration by using thicker side windows and more absorbent insulators around the tailgate and mirrors. The panoramic sunroof, with electric drive, allows natural light to fill the cabin increasing the feeling of spaciousness and comfort.
The 2018 Ford C-Max can accommodate five occupants with great comfort, thanks to the three individual and folding rear seats to optimize space. The Grand C-Max, with seven seats, also allows you to easily fold the second row of seats under the right seat.
This ingenious 2 + 2 + 2 design allows you to create a walkable corridor that facilitates access to the rear seats. As for its dimensions, the C-Max is 4,379 mm long, 1,828 mm wide and 1,610 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,648 mm. Meanwhile, the Grand C-Max variant has a length of 4,519 mm, a width of 1,828 mm and a height of 1,642 mm, all with a wheelbase of 2,788 mm.
Thus, the Grand C-Max is 140 mm longer and 32 mm higher, with a 140 mm longer wheelbase.
In terms of volumetric capacity, the trunk of the C-Max has 471 liters in its standard configuration, a figure that is increased to 1,723 liters once the rear seats are folded down.
In the case of the Grand C-Max five-seater, the capacity is 600 liters expandable to 1,867 liters, while the seven-seat variant has 92 liters with seven seats, 475 liters with the third row down and 1,742 liters with the two rear rows folded.
Security and technology systems
The C-Max family has a complete package of security systems that offer maximum protection for the occupants, obtaining the maximum recognition granted by the Euro NCAP organization.
They highlight, among others, the ‘Active City Stop’ city braking system, which uses the vehicle’s front sensors to detect static objects on the road and preload the brakes if the vehicle approaches an object at too much speed, the control of Tire pressure (TPMS), or adaptive front lighting system, which adjusts the angle of the beam of light to one of its seven configurations, depending on traffic and road conditions.
The C-Max family can optionally equip the ‘Sync2’ connectivity system through voice recognition, which incorporates an eight-inch high resolution color touch screen and voice controls to use the audio, navigation, climate control functions and telephony. The C-Max can also incorporate adaptive cruise control, which allows drivers to maintain a certain distance from the vehicle in front, even if that vehicle is running slower than the cruise speed.
In the range of engines of the C-Max family we find the 1.0 and 1.5 liter EcoBoost petrol engines, with powers of 100, 125 and 150 hp, as the only option in the family. In the diesel section, TDCi engines were available with significant improvements in power and efficiency.
The 1.5-liter TDCi, available in 95 hp and 120 hp version, was a completely redesigned engine that meant an improvement over the 1.6-liter diesel engine it replaced. The diesel range was completed by the 2.0 TDCi of 150CV. Both mechanics were available with a six-speed manual gearbox or with the PowerShift automatic transmission.
