Esprit design

The first version of the Esprit (Esprit S1) came to light in 1976. Its design and maneuverability drove everyone who could try it and the success at the Paris Motor Show was resounding. But its release was not so much.

The Lotus Esprit S1 was presented as “the supercar“. The problem is that the car really did not have so much power and others in the range far exceeded it. It was like going in a mid-high-end car that looked like luxury range.

After remodeling the Esprit again, it was not until 1980 when Lotus managed to “hit the key”. By adding the turbocharger, the new turbocharged engine increased the power to 213 hp so that the car could reach 240 km / h and go from 0 to 100 in 6.1 seconds. Almost nothing.

The exterior was also redesigned to give a more robust and aerodynamic look with a deeper front air intake, more aggressive bumpers and a rear cover of blinds. And, as if that were not enough, the Esprit Turbo Essex appeared again in the James Bond saga (Only for your eyes).

Versions than sales

The grace of the Lotus Esprit is that it had more than 8 versions from 1976 to 2004: S1, S2, S3, Turbo, Sport 300, S4, V8 and Sport 350. And the most curious thing is that, despite all these changes , all these versions arrived between 1976 and 1999, since from there Lotus made hardly any change in this vehicle.

Each version was an aesthetic change (the most notable of Peter Stevens in 1987) and, above all, an improvement in the engine. After the initial failure Lotus’s obsession was to be the supercar that everyone expected. In fact, it reached an acceleration of 0 to 100 in just 4.3 seconds.

New version of the Lotus Esprit

In 2010 a new version of the Lotus Esprit was presented at the Paris Motor Show. Dany Bahar, CEO of Lotus, was determined to create new models and, above all, recover this one.

The car would be lightweight, compact and efficient, with a V6-V8 engine and even a hybrid version. Bahar’s claims were very high, but not so much the safety of the rest of the team in him. In fact, he was fired in 2012, the brand was about to disappear and changed ownership several times.
