M1 BMW 1970

BMW M1 Procar
It was called BMW M1 Procar and only forty units were assembled, destined to compete in a single-brand cup called BMW M1 ProcarChampionship. Among its merits, was the gathering of some of the best drivers of the time, such as Nikki Lauda, Nelson Piquet and ClayRegazzoni. However, this competition was dismantled two seasons after its creation.
The design was the work of Giorgio Giugiaro, based on the turbo BMW with “seagull wings” doors of 1972, created by BMW designer Paul Bracq.
Lamborghini could not fulfill its part of the commitment made with BMW MotorsportGmbH to build the M1 and the need to manufacture 400 units in two years put a serious squeeze on the German brand. Finally, a somewhat complex solution was chosen, although the objective was achieved.
The frame was built by Marchesi and the fiberglass reinforced plastic body, is commissioned by T.I.R., both located in Modena (Italy). From there, they went to ItalDesign, the company of the designer Giorgio Giugiaro, where the two pieces were assembled and the equipment and interior coverings were added.
The mechanical components were assembled at StuttgartBaur, a German firm specializing in building buses, was responsible for this part of the construction process. So each unit, before starting it for the first time, had a good background of kilometers behind it.
The dimensions 4.36 meters long, 1.82 meters wide, 1.14 meters high and a wheelbase of 2.6 meters, its empty weight was only 1,300 kilograms.
Inside BMW M1
The interior of the M1 was typical of sports cars from the 1970s and somewhat luxurious for the time. The sports seats were wrapped in cloth and leather, a design that was shared with the door panels. A huge center console separated the seats and included a small storage compartment, the handbrake lever, the shift lever and several buttons and switches.
A simple dashboard provided all the essential data for the driver, while the center console consisted of air conditioning switches and the standard radio with cassette player. Of course, there is nothing dramatic inside the M1, but that was the standard for the supercars of the late 1970s. On top of that, both free space and legroom were very restricted. All route examples came with a predominantly black interior and BMW did not offer any of the customization options available today.
