It was designed on the platform of a Dauphiné, used a rear central engine layout and advanced cab. Oriented towards luxury, a V8 engine consisting of two Dauphiné blocks with 1.7 liters and 76 horsepower was proposed.

There were several options and all proposed vehicles that broke with the “Renault mold” in force until then. Project 900, as this prototype was called, was one of the most radical and there was never an intention to take it to the assembly line.

Its purpose should rather be to test several constructive criteria and some design ideas, with some scandalous proposals for the time. With him the option of including a V8 engine in the Renault range was flirted, maintaining the rear engine scheme and trying new body combinations.

The Renault concept 900 manipulated visual perception at this time, created the illusion of an upside down car, changed the concept of accepted patterns for the front and rear of a vehicle.

This was the way to keep the idea that the brand had for the time to equip the cars with a central rear engine.

The Renault concept 900 showed a proposal for a 1.7-liter V-cylinder engine, which used two 4-in-line engines that came from the Renault Gordini. This V8 used two Solex carburetors, which were mounted in the center of the V to feed it and achieved about 76 horsepower.



What most definitely caught the attention of the Renault concept 900 was the body, its different forms, used glass in a way that was uncommon in European cars of the time that were very focused. But in the end it was not very colorful and somewhat rudimentary, this prototype used what could be said a hatchback type body, but vice versa, where the fifth door was the front of the vehicle.

Finally the Renault concept 900 did not come to light, some disadvantages prevented its success, apart from its quirky design, among them a trunk with difficult access and the driver’s position in front of the front axle, a concept that for the time was not very accepted and that gave the feeling of insecurity.

The Renault concept 900 did not survive, it was too extravagant and impractical. However, it served as a perfect smokescreen for the development of a vehicle like the Renault 4, the revolutionary model of the brand that was launched to conquer the market of the time.
